The Scottish Curriculum
At Head of Muir Primary School, we are proud to follow the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, which is designed to provide a well-rounded education to our students.
The curriculum aims to ensure that every child receives a holistic learning experience that prepares them for the challenges of the future.
The Scottish Curriculum for Excellence is built upon four fundamental principles, which guide our teaching and learning practices. These principles are: challenge and enjoyment, breadth, progression and depth. By focusing on these principles, we strive to provide our students with a high-quality education that meets their individual needs and supports their overall development.
The curriculum is structured into three levels: Early Level, First Level, and Second Level.
The Early Level is aimed at children aged 3 to 6 years old and focuses on building a strong foundation of skills and knowledge across various subject areas. At this stage, we place a special emphasis on play-based learning and hands-on activities to ensure that our young learners are engaged and motivated to explore the world around them.
Moving on to the First Level, which is for aimed for children aged 6 to 9 years old, our focus shifts towards developing essential literacy and numeracy skills, as well as introducing subjects such as science, social studies and expressive arts. We encourage our students to become active learners who can work collaboratively and think critically to solve problems.
As our students progress to the Second Level, which is aimed for children aged 9 to 12 years old, they are given more opportunities to deepen their understanding of various subjects and expand their critical thinking skills. We promote interdisciplinary learning and provide a range of real-life contexts for our students to apply their knowledge and skills.
Throughout all levels of the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, we strive to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where every child feels valued and respected. We place a strong emphasis on developing their capacities as responsible citizens, effective contributors, confident individuals and successful learners.
In conclusion, the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence at Head of Muir Primary School is designed to provide our students with a broad and balanced education that prepares them for the challenges and opportunities of the future. By adhering to the fundamental principles of the curriculum and using a range of engaging teaching methods, we aim to develop well-rounded individuals who are ready to thrive in an ever-changing world.
